In the past fifty years, North Central Philadelphia residents have witnessed many changes in their community including severe economic conditions, massive population losses, manufacturing declines, and urban renewal efforts. Together, these forces facilitated the clearing of large residential areas for the expansion of Temple University into the community. Assertiveness shown by residents in the late 1960s demonstrated their dogged determination to fight for their families, homes, and neighborhood and make their voices heard with regard to issues concerning the expansion of institutions in the area, specifically Temple University.
The Temple University Area, or North Central Philadelphia discussed here, is bounded generally by Spring Garden Street to the south and Hunting Park Avenue to the north between 33rd and 10th Streets.
