In 2006, Fairmount was wracked with racial tension surrounding the death of white teenager and neighborhood resident Robert Pierson. Police charged Quintzell McCall, a black teenager from North Philadelphia, with the murder. Though acquitted of murder, he was convicted on firearms chargers. The case brought to light continuing racial tension between two largely segregated neighborhoods separated only by Girard Ave. Citypaper and Citypaper’s The Clog have extensive coverage of the murder and trial.
